A History in the making: Today's Fort Peachtree Chapter Daughters
The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, was founded in the late 19th century by strong, purposeful, forward-looking women who honored our country, its heritage and history. The Fort Peachtree Chapter, Georgia Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, was formed in 1964 to further the aims of the National Society in this State. Since our beginning, the chapter has continued to support our Society's objectives of Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism. As a heritage society, we can proudly say the patriot ancestors of every member believed in the principles on which this country was founded, and faithfully and consistently aided the cause of freedom at the time of the American Revolution, between April 1775 and November 1783. We are all connected in that way. A certificate of membership in the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution is much more than a "pedigree." All members contribute and participate in chapter activities and goals. Today's DAR Daughter is a vital member of the community, interested in history, local public and private schools, DAR-sponsored schools, literacy, good citizenship, commemorative events, women's issues, maintaining DAR properties, naturalization of citizens, preserving our heritage, native Americans, conservation, recognition of achievement, veterans and national defense, and service to God, Home, and Country. Members can choose their areas of special interest. While the DAR encourages a strong national defense as a matter of historical importance, it does not take positions on any current issues or legislative matters. The DAR is a non-partisan, non-political organization. Within the chapter are business owners, bankers, designers, doctors, accountants, artists, entrepreneurs, teachers, musicians, real estate brokers, writers, homemakers, insurance agents, lawyers, librarians, sportswomen, gardeners, and so much more, including single women, wives, mothers, aunts, and grandmothers. We come together to support worthy causes, to learn and to educate, to be a role model for others, and to enjoy fellowship while working together. The Fort Peachtree Chapter serves a broad swath of the State of Georgia, with the majority of chapter members living in the Greater Atlanta Metropolitan Area. In addition to having fifteen members who live outside Georgia, we also have members who live in the following Georgia communities, towns, and cities:
From September through May, the Fort Peachtree Chapter holds its monthly meetings, with March set aside for the annual Georgia State Society Conference, which is held in different cities across the state. In July, the National Society holds its annual Continental Congress meeting, open to all members, at its Headquarters in Washington, D.C. During August, there is a State Society workshop to provide essential information and training. The chapter may also hold field day trips during the year. Our chapter meetings are held in church assembly halls, library and business community rooms, private clubs and, occasionally, in private homes. Most are scheduled the second Thursday of the month and include lunch, ranging from simple box lunches to catered private club luncheons. Women who have questions about DAR membership, applications, or activities, or are interested in observing a meeting of the Fort Peachtree Chapter, are invited to click on the link in this website to send an online message to a chapter officer. Whether or not you have a relative who is, or was, a DAR member, we would like to hear from you.
